By the order No. 15 of the Department of Archives of Lithuania under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, dated February 26, 1996, “On the Establishment and Liquidation of Archives,” the Švenčionys District Archive was liquidated, and the document collections of the mentioned archive were transferred, as of April 1, 1996, to the newly established Vilnius County Archive. From June 28, 1997, to September 2, 2006, a structural subdivision – a branch – of the Vilnius County Archive operated in Ukmergė.

As of January 1, 2017, the Utena County Archive was merged with the Vilnius County Archive. The newly functioning archive was named the Vilnius Regional State Archive. Since January 1, 2017, a structural subdivision – a branch – of the Vilnius Regional State Archive has been operating in Utena.

The Vilnius Regional State Archive collects, preserves, researches, and promotes documents of historical, cultural, and practical significance, transferred by state and municipal institutions, establishments, enterprises, as well as non-governmental organizations, private legal entities, and individuals operating or having operated within the current territories of Vilnius and Utena counties. The archive ensures the preservation of accumulated documents, public access to the preserved documents, supervises the management of operational documents of state and municipal institutions, establishments, and enterprises, provides methodological and practical assistance to legal and natural persons, conducts document searches, and issues certificates, extracts, and other documents based on preserved records to confirm legal facts.
