The Vilnius Regional State Archive holds 1,597 document collections (fonds), comprising more than 673,415 archival units listed in 2,687 inventories.

The documents preserved in the Vilnius Regional State Archive are organized into two major collections:

1. Documents from the Soviet Period (1940–1941, 1944–1990)

These documents pertain to the activities of state and local government institutions, enterprises, establishments, and organizations in the districts of Širvintos, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė, Vilnius County, and the cities and regions of Širvintos, Ukmergė, Vilnius, as well as the areas of Eišiškės, Naujoji Vilnia, Nemenčinė, Pabradė, Smėliai, Šalčininkai, Švenčionėliai, Švenčionys, Trakai, and Vievis.

This collection includes:

  • Local government and self-government institutions: documents of executive committees and their subdivisions from counties (1940–1941, 1944–1950), districts (1950–1990), townships, towns, settlements, and Vilnius city and its districts (1940–1990).

  • Law enforcement and judicial institutions: documents from people’s courts in the districts of Eišiškės, Nemenčinė, Smėliai, Šalčininkai, Švenčionėliai, Švenčionys, Trakai, Vievis, and from various county and city people's courts, including those in Vilnius (e.g., Lenin, October, Soviet, and Naujoji Vilnia districts), as well as from the Vilnius Regional Court (1949–1953). Also includes prosecutorial records from Trakai, Ukmergė, Švenčionys, Vilnius districts, and the Vilnius Region.

  • Notary offices: records from notary offices in the districts of Šalčininkai, Širvintos, Švenčionėliai, Švenčionys, Trakai, and Ukmergė, as well as from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd State Notary Offices of Vilnius and the 1st Vilnius Notary Office.

  • Public administration, finance, statistics institutions and industrial enterprises, trade cooperatives, transportation, construction, urban planning, utilities, agriculture and forestry (kolkhozes, sovkhozes, etc.), and healthcare, education, cultural institutions, and public organizations.

  • Scientific institutions: includes research and technical documentation from industrial and agricultural research institutes. Particularly important are the records of the joint-stock company Krašto projektai (formerly the Kolkhoz Construction Design Institute), the Urban Construction Design Institute, the Monument Restoration Design Institute, the National Land Management Design Institute, the Engineering Research Institute, the Biotechnology Institute, and others.

2. Documents from the Independence Period (since 1990)

This collection includes records from local government institutions, enterprises, establishments, and organizations in the districts of Šalčininkai, Širvintos, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė, Vilnius, and Vilnius city.

  • Local government and self-government institutions: documents from district councils and boards, town councils and mayors of Eišiškės, Lentvaris, Nemenčinė, Pabradė, Šalčininkai, Širvintos, Švenčionėliai, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė, Vievis, and Vilnius (1990–1995). Includes records from elderates in Trakų Vokė (Vilnius District, 1995–1998), Elektrėnai, Grigiškės, Semeliškės, Vievis (Trakai District, 1995–2000), and from the municipal administrations of Trakai (1995–2001), Vilnius District (1990–1998), and Vilnius City (1990–2000), as well as from the Vilnius County Governor's Administration (1995–2005).

  • Law enforcement and judiciary institutions: records from district courts in Vilnius, Šalčininkai, Trakai, Švenčionys (1990–2015), and the Vilnius Regional Court (1999–2013), as well as police departments in Širvintos, Vilnius, Trakai, Švenčionys, Elektrėnai, Ukmergė, Šalčininkai, and Vilnius city (1989–2008).

  • Notary offices: records from the 2nd and 3rd Vilnius City Notary Offices (1991–1992), Vilnius District Notary Office (1992), and the personal records of notary Danutė Juknevičienė (Vilnius 16th Notary Bureau, 1993–1999).

  • Privatization commissions and agencies: documents from the Vilnius City Privatization Commission and various regional privatization agencies (Širvintos, Šalčininkai, Švenčionys, Ukmergė, Vilnius districts, 1991–1995).

  • Agrarian reform agencies: records from local agrarian reform offices in Šalčininkai, Širvintos, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė, and Vilnius districts (1991–1997).

  • Enterprises and institutions: documents from enterprises in industry, agriculture, forestry, horticulture, transportation, road construction, plumbing, personal services, and from cultural and educational institutions.

3. Personal Fonds

The archive also preserves the personal document collections of notable individuals such as Juozas Kondratas, Vladas Minderis, Julijonas Petronis, Balys Šileikis, Juozas Navikas, Miša Jakobas, Žybartas Simonaitis, among others.
